Community Wellness (Proshanti)

To improve the quality of life in the communities; SAJIDA Foundation works through sustainable and effective interventions. Therefore SAJIDA Foundation recognizes that an integrated approach is crucial for progress across the multiple goals covered in this vision-Ensuring healthy lives and promote well-being for all microfinance members; ensuring access to water and sanitation; and, empowering the bottom percentile of income earners and promote economic inclusion. In reflection of this, Community Wellness Program is reformed in January 2016 from the former Community Health Program to integrate psychosocial and legal support along with existing health care interventions. The integrated services, delivered through a network of community wellness workers and Community organizers, are provided in 8 districts – Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Comilla, Chittagong and Pabna. This program is essentially a part of our NIRAPOTTA (micro-insurance program) to help members in their needs.

For its microfinance members, SAJIDA Foundation has trained women from within communities as community wellness workers known as SAJIDA Bondhus (Friends of SAJIDA). SAJIDA Bondhus are trained to deliver preventive and basic diagnostic on health issues, by the side they also raise awareness in. In addition to these services, SAJIDA Bondhus create awareness among our members on immunization, pregnancy care, dental hygiene, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), common psychosocial and legal problems that exist in our society. They are also skilled to provide pre and post natal care. Some SAJIDA Bondhus are trained as para-counselors to provide psychosocial counseling support to members and beneficiaries. A recent in-house study revealed that they have well-known acceptance in the community as a person our members can rely on. SAJIDA Bondhus have established themselves in their respective communities to be the first stop for any health/psychosocial/legal need. Each microfinance branch has one SAJIDA Bondhu who provides the above mentioned services to the members.

In Bakshigonj, sub-district of Jamalpur community wellness workers are part of SAJIDA Foundation’s Enhancing Resources and Increasing Capacities of Poor Households Towards Elimination of their Poverty (ENRICH)/SAMRIDDHI project. The community wellness workers under this program are called Shasthya Shebikas and are essentially the same as SAJIDA Bandhus. Each Shasthya Shebikais assigned households to provide basic healthcare and create awareness. ENRICH/SAMRIDDHI also conducts satellite clinics attended by a paramedic. Periodic camps with general and specialist physicians are also organized.
